Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Carbon County Commissioner Casey Hopes to talk about fire restrictions and upcoming road construction projects taking place in the county.

Things are going well at the county as Hopes explains, “I am pleased, its kind of cyclical, it ebbs and flows, sometimes you’re really busy and sometimes there’s not a whole lot going on. This is a time where we’re able to catch up a little bit on some stuff in the county and some departments are super busy but others are a little more laxed and have some catch up time.” Right now, there are some departments that are using the time to prepare for some of their summer events.

Commissioner Hopes has been busy as a member of the state’s Catastrophic Fire Committee and this group have been meeting together to develop some safety precautions for lands around the state. “So in 2012 after the Seeley fire, and some of the other big fires around the state the state formed what is called the Catastrophic Fire Committee and their whole job is to go out and do mitigation, prevention basically of areas and protection of key assets throughout the state. So the Catastrophic Fire Committee is set up to protect water sheds, to protect towers and stuff that seem to be up on your higher mountains where the fires would happen.” It is important for the committee to educate residents on what fire restrictions are being enforced and how to prevent wildfires.

The county has several road construction projects coming up this summer that they would like folks to be aware of.  “We have all of our county roads on about a five-year rotating cycle where we do a chip seal about every five years, we go in fill the pot holes. There are pot holes that get filled on other roads outside of that but that main five-year cycle is pretty important so we can stay on top of our road work. So they are going to be distributed throughout the county, dispersed is probably a better word, throughout the county. So just be aware when you start to see those cones and the signs, slow down a little bit, be extra careful and cautious,” stated Commissioner Hopes.

The county wants residents to know about a huge project that will be taking place over the summer in Price Canyon. “The other big project, and I’m not speaking for UDOT. I saw the road signs up yesterday when I was coming home from a meeting and they’re notifying us that construction is going to start soon. So if you have to go up north in the next couple of weeks start to pay attention to the sign of when that construction is going to start. Then after that give yourself extra time because it’s a major project, its starts at Emma Park and goes all the way down to Helper, so its going to be a major reconstruction of the entire road, it’s needed,” stated Commissioner Hopes.
