Walter T. “Wally” Axelgard, Jr., a longtime resident of Carbon County, age 73, passed away suddenly on November 21, 2022 at his home.

He was born on July 21, 1949 to Walter T. and June Okleberry Axelgard in Price, Utah where he lived most of his life. He was a 1967 graduate of Carbon High and later graduated from the University of Utah. Wally proudly served his country in the United States Navy; serving several tours in Vietnam. He married his sweetheart and the love of his life, LeAnna Bishop in 1969 and they have been virtually inseparable for the past fifty-three years.

In recent years, he experienced the difficult effects of the Covid-19 virus, but, bravely fought through this challenge as he continued to serve the needs of the mining community in Carbon and Emery counties.

Wally spent his entire adult life working in the tire business established in Eastern Utah by his father, Walt, with whom he was often compared for his hard work and unselfish manner. Possessed with a kind soul and warm personality; Wally was a father to many and a dear friend to many more. He loved his family, his dogs and horses, and working hard.

The family would like to thank the skilled and devoted doctors and nurses at various hospitals: VA Hospital in Salt Lake City, University of Utah, Utah Valley, Timpanogos, and Advanced Health Care of Salem, for their wonderful support and care.

Wally is survived by his wife, LeAnna Bishop Axelgard; daughter, Jewels; brothers, Kevin (Bonnie) Axelgard and Scott Axelgard; and sister, Julie (Ron) Jarvis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter T. and June Okleberry Axelgard; his beloved daughter, Jessica; brother, Mick Axelgard; sister-in-law, Deanna Axelgard; and niece, Mikala.

Wally; in your life you were a cherished husband, father, friend, and colleague. Beloved, admired, and respected; you changed the lives of the people around you with your friendly, caring way, and love of hard work. You carried your father’s name and legacy forward with dignity and respect, and made the world a better, kinder place. You will be deeply missed by those in your home and community; you will be remembered and cherished always.

Funeral service, Thursday, December 1, 2022, 11:00 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home (233 East Main Street, Price, Utah). The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Wellington City Cemetery, Wellington, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price and Huntington where friends are always welcome daily and may share memories of Wally online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net
