The Division of Wildlife Resources will be conducting a Fishing Checkpoint on Jan. 28 at Scofield Reservoir. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Conservation Outreach Manager, Aaron Bott to get all the details about this spot check.

“All across the state our Law Enforcement Officers have checking points and sometimes they’re for hunts, where we check the animals that are harvested. Sometimes we do them for fishing, we’re looking to check for fishing licenses, also take limits – seeing how many fish are being pulled out of the water and making sure that they’re being harvested legally,” stated Bott. The daily limit depends on the waterbody and the species that you are fishing. Daily fish limits are meant to keep folks from taking too much fishing at one time.

Rules and regulations can be found by reading the latest DWR publication. “The best thing to do would be to check our Fishing Guidebook, look at the regulations. We just had our 2023 guidebook come out this last week, so get on there and make sure you’re following the regulations,” said Bott. The guidebook can be downloaded to your cell phone for easy access while out in the backcountry.

All anglers can expect the Fishing Checkpoint to be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Scofield Reservoir from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  “You know our officers are going to be stopping all motorized vehicles traveling north on Highway 96, and all those coming out of Madison Bay. So you’ll be stopped and our officers will check you, check your fishing license, look to see what you’ve taken out of the water and yea, hopefully, everything will go smoothly,” explained Bott. They look at the fish to help officials determine certain species that are in the reservoir, conduct population surveys and what condition the fish are in.
