Jace Frandsen poured in a career-high 30 points as the Emery Spartans earned their first win of the season 78-32 over Providence Hall in the home opener Wednesday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Starting fast, the Spartans opened a 23-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. The domination occurred on both sides of the floor as Emery held Providence Hall without a single field goal until the 6:10 mark of the second quarter.
“Last week was rough and not how we wanted to start but we are playing to get better,” said head coach Dave Justice. “We made a few adjustments, and I think that helped. Hopefully we learned from last week and I think tonight was a big step forward.”
Frandsen nearly outscored the Patriots all by himself as he knocked down seven three-pointers. Entering the break with 10 points, he caught fire throughout the final two quarters as he added 20 more points in limited time throughout the second half.
“It’s just a lot easier to find your rhythm here at home,” said Frandsen after the win. “It gets easier after you see the ball go in. We have a lot of guys that can shoot the ball, and they could have done exactly what I did if they had the shots.”
Emery’s offensive explosion was well rounded as eight players scored at least one point. Scott Johansen scored from all over the floor, finishing with 16 points. West Johansen connected on his first five shot attempts as he ended with 14 points.
Wednesday’s win halts a two-game losing skid to open the season. The Spartans suffered back-to-back road losses to South Summit and Morgan, both by double digits, in the first action of the new campaign.
Now 1-2 on the young season the Spartans will take the rest of the week off before returning with another road game on Dec. 4 against American Leadership Academy. Live coverage of that road contest will air live on KOAL 107.3 FM, 750 AM and on YouTube- Castle Country Radio Emery.
