While the winter sports season was still wrapping up, three Carbon Lady Dino runners and one future Dino took part in the Snow Canyon Winter Classic in St George. It was the distance runners who took center stage at the meet, and Rozlyn Stowe came away with three first-place finishes, including a school record that has stood since 1980.
Track and field season usually doesn’t start until March. Still, whenever you get the opportunity to get practice in, they will take it—traveling to St George to take part in the Winter Classic, where ages 11 through 18 competed in different divisions.
The three Lady Dinos competed in three distance events: the 800, 1600, and 3200 meters. In the 800, Stowe finished first with a time of 2:18.37. Josie Yates came in 9th with 2:50.92, and Brettlee Kennedy finished 10th in 2:53.39.
Moving into the 1600, Stowe once again earned top honors in a time of 5:05.96, finishing a full 30 seconds over Brooklyn Tarr and her time of 5:38.85. Yates finished 8th in 6:09.09, and Kennedy 11th at 6:28:30.
It was the 3200 where Stowe shone the brightest, finishing in a first-place time of 10:42.75, almost a full minute ahead of Isabella Buckley and her time of 11:34.83. Stowe’s time gives her a school record that has stood for 46 years, set by Misty Larsen in the 3200 at 11:04.00. This is the second-oldest record in school history. It also puts Stowe one record shy of holding the most school records in history, as she is tied with Garrett Marsing at four.
Also, in the 3200, Yates finished 4th with a time of 13:04.47, and Kennedy finished 6th with a time of 13:53.41.
In the 13 & 14-year-old division, another Stowe, this time Madelyn, earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 400 and the 800. In the 400, she finished in 1:16.77, and in the 800, she finished in 2:55.42.
This is sure to be the beginning of great things to come for Carbon Lady Dinos’ track and field this season. Make sure you follow along on Castle Country Radio for all the updates on their competitions when they become available.
