While most students are enjoying their summer with family and friends, going on vacations and attending family reunions, wrestlers are a different breed. When the high school wrestling season ends, that’s when the real season begins for wrestlers; some even consider it (the high school season) the off-season. Carbon Dino wrestler Jantz Greenhalgh traveled to North Dakota this week for the US Marine Corps Jr. Nationals, facing athletes from across the country. Thousands of wrestlers descended upon the Fargo Dome, and Greenhalgh came away with a 7th-place finish in Greco-Roman, earning him All-American status.
Greenhalgh entered the tournament as the Utah 3A State Champion, and even though the high school wrestling season won’t start for another 5 months, he is staying sharp and looking forward to defending that State Championship.
Geenhalgh competed in two different disciplines, Freestyle and Greco-Roman. While he didn’t place in freestyle, he came back to take a seventh-place finish in Greco-Roman.
Getting started in the round of 128 of the Freestyle competition, Greenhagh faced Kylan Nakamura of Hawaii, coming away with a win by Technical fall. Up next was Carmine Crisman of Montana, taking the win by Technical Fall once again. Casen Becker of Colorado handed him his first loss, an 8-4 decision that dropped him to the consolation round. He would have three matches in the consolation rounds, taking on Greyson McDonald of Florida in one, winning 9-4. In another, he faced Jaxson Avery of South Dakota, earning a 7-2 win. He would close things out with a loss against Knox Ayala in a 7-4 decision.
In Greco-Roman, he would begin his march in the round of 64, claiming a victory by Technical Fall over Kashton Broeckelman of Kansas. In the round of 32, he claimed another Technical Fall win over Jayson Sanchez of California. His first loss would come from a familiar face, Becker of Colorado, in a 4-3 decision, dropping him into the consolation round.
In the consolation round, he would have to work his way back up to finish in the top ten, facing four opponents and finishing with a 3-1 mark, with wins over Gavin Hoeft of Minnesota with a 6-2 decision. He would also take a win over Michael Perna of New Jersey by Technical Fall. In the MAtch against Leland Frost of Arizona, he earned a 6-0 decision, but in the match with Miro Parr-Coffin of Washington, he fell by a 7-1 decision, putting him in the seventh-place match against Cam Johnson of North Carolina, where Greenhalgh claimed the victory by Technical Fall in a time of 1:03.
Also competing at the event representing Carbon were Ashdyn Densley and Jack Burdick, with Burdick also earning All-American honors.
Congratulations go out to All-American Jantz Greenhalgh.
