The Carbon Lady Dinos closed out the basketball season with a 48-39 loss to the South Sevier Rams in the 3A State Championship Tournament’s consolation bracket Friday morning at Dixie State University in St. George.
Senior Kelsey Sorenson finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in her final high school contest. Abbie Saccomanno also scored 15 points, joining Sorenson as the only two Carbon players to reach double-figures in the loss.
Playing for a chance to advance to the fifth place game Saturday morning, the Dinos shot just nine-percent from the field in the first half. Despite a massive second half turnaround, the 13-point half time deficit was too much to overcome.
Mackenzie Jones led the way for the Rams with a team-high 13 points. Mattie Blackburn chipped in with 12, and Brookell Brindley contributed nine. The win moves South Sevier to the final day of competition on Saturday against either Morgan or Judge Memorial.
Carbon responded from the sluggish first half by shooting 50-percent from the field over the final two quarters. After failing to convert a three-point make in the first half, the Dinos converted five in the second to make the game interesting down the stretch.
Friday’s loss comes just a day after the Dinos were eliminated from championship contention with a 70-44 loss to the Emery Spartans. The back-to-back defeats sets Carbon’s final record at 17-7 overall for the year.
