The school year may be coming to an end but school lunch will still be served in the Carbon County School District area. The Summer Lunch Program makes healthy and nutritious meals available for children who otherwise may not get a well-rounded meal at home during the summer.

Patti Rigby, Child Nutrition Director spoke about the program, “We are gearing up for our free summer lunch program that starts on June 6. The summer program runs most of June, all of July and will end on August 19. This is the longest summer lunch season we have every had and we’re very excited to serve the community for the majority of the summer break.”

Our region is considered an economic disadvantage area and because of this two new sites have been added to the Summer Lunch Program. “The new sites are Creekview Elementary, Monday through Thursday 11:00 am to noon and Wellington City Park, Monday through Friday 11:00 am to noon. Then same as last year Bruin Point Elementary, Monday through Thursday, 11:00 am till noon and Sally Mauro, Monday through Thursday, 11:00 am till noon,” said Rigby. Castle Valley Center is the only site that will offer both breakfast and lunch during the summer. Breakfast will begin at 8:30 am till 9:00 am and lunch 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

As per federal guidelines meals are not “grab-n-go” they must be eaten where served on site. “Anyone and everyone ages 18 and under can eat for free. People don’t need to be from our county to even benefit from this program. Again this year we will have baby food and as always adult can eat for $3.75 at the sites also. So parents bringing their kids, they can pack a lunch or sit down and have lunch with their children for $3.75,” stated Rigby.

Brenna Thomas, Manager at the Creekview site talked about the various items that will be served over the summer, “We plan to stick with the kids favorites like chicken nuggets, pizza rippers, nachos, orange chicken, chicken legs, cheeseburgers etc. Kids will have three choices at least until we start running out of the most popular choice that day. I encourage kids to get there early, we will be serving the full hour though and we will always try to prepare enough but we don’t want to over prepare.”
