The Carbon Lady Dinos suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to the Cedar Red in the one-loss bracket in the 3A state championship tournament Thursday afternoon, ending the 2016 season.

Kinley Nelson was hit with the loss on the mound despite striking out nine batters and keeping Cedar off rhythm throughout the game. Brighton Holyoak recorded the win for Cedar, matching Nelson’s strikeout total with nine.

On top of pitching a gem, Nelson recorded two singles to help push the stale Carbon offense. Kinley Nelson also finished with two singles and Cali Fossat knocked the team’s lone extra base hit with a double. McKenna Sorenson and Chandell Nichols both registered one single.

As a team the Lady Dinos committed four total errors, compared to just one for Cedar. Hannah Williams led the Cedar offense with a double and a single, while six others ended with one single.

Before entering the tournament Carbon ended in a three way tie for second place in Region 12, but received the nod for No. 2 after winning two coin flip tiebreakers. The Lady Dinos suffered their first loss in the opening round falling to Stansbury 6-3. Responding with a huge offensive performance, the team extended their season with a 13-3 win over Morgan.
