The Carbon County School District weekly updates have been a regular staple each week at the KOAL 103.9 FM Newsroom, we started the 2015-2016 weekly segment with Superintendent Steve Carlson so it’s only fitting to end the school year the same.

Carbon High School will host their graduation on Friday, May 27 at 1:00 pm. Carlson said, “Between the high school principals, high school counselors and the teachers they’ve been scrambling for the last couple of weeks to make sure there was no students that didn’t have an assignment taken care of, they’ve gone through their practices, just the music it’s a huge process. It’s our Emmy’s, you know our big awards, our Oscar night or whatever so it’s a huge process. Both the Lighthouse and the Carbon High School really prepare well for it, they have the kids, they’re just really professional and a put together graduation and I would like to congratulate Principal Bean and Principal Bianco for the great jobs they do.”

Two other graduation ceremonies are also slated for the district that evening. “We just ask everybody to be really, really aware of everything this Friday because there is a lot happening. We have Carbon High graduating at 1:00 pm at the BDAC on USU Eastern’s campus and then at 5 o’clock our Lighthouse Students are graduating at the Lighthouse and then at 7 o’clock we actually have the Adult Education with a graduation ceremony there’s usually about anywhere from 15 to 20 of those. We have three big graduations on Friday and it will be a big day for those folks,” stated Carlson. Students are urged to please be safe and responsible when it comes to their graduation celebrations.

The school district is currently getting back SAGE testing scores and Carlson enthusiastically spoke about the results, “I’ll just say I need to give a huge shoot-out to the teachers and the principals and especially the students because we’ve really had an incredible growth this year from last year’s scores to this year’s scores. We are just really excited about and as you may or may not know the Governor came out against SAGE and Common Core a couple of weeks ago and there is a lot of discussion about doing away with sage or redoing it. It’s kind of discouraging because we have worked so hard, we’ve got it figured out now, we really feel like we got it down and we’re doing a good job.” The core program that is currently used in the district has been good solid with great standards for students.

The school district will close out this year with the loss of 20-25 teachers either to retirement or relocation but those spots have currently been filled for next year. Overall the school year was great and Carlson is looking forward to 2016-2017.
