The 3A classification finished 3-9 in the first week of the high school football season. The non-region season will continue for the next three weeks as team’s prepare for league opener on Sept. 16.

Manti head coach Cole Meacham joined this week’s edition of High School Football Live on KOAL 103.9 FM and 750 AM to discuss the season opening win over Carbon. Juan Diego head coach John Colosimo also joined to breakdown the defending champions loss to 5A West Jordan.

3A North:
Emery-7, Summit Academy- 20:
Senior Kolton Butler returned an interception 95-yards for the Spartans only touchdown of the game. Offensively Logan Cox led the way on the ground for Emery, finishing with 104 yards on only 14 carries.

Carbon- 0, Manti- 42:
Senior Nathan Olsen provided the Dinos a high note, leading the offense with 59 yards on 14 carries. Both sophomore Noah Jones and junior Triton Abeyta took snaps under center as Carbon was shutout in the opener.

Grantsville- 7, Cyprus- 6:
The Cowboys were shutout in the first, second and fourth quarters, but a 40-yard touchdown run by Andrew Floyd was enough to grab the victory. Grantsville’s defense kept Cyprus out of the end zone, allowing just two field goals in the win.

Juan Diego-25, West Jordan- 32:
The defending 3A champions suffered a heartbreaking loss in the season opener to 5A West Jordan, despite leading for the majority of the game. Running back Stone Azarcon accumulated three touchdowns (one receiving) in the setback.

Morgan-0, Bear River- 14:
Despite a solid defensive performance the Trojans were unable to finish multiple established drives. Bear River scored their first touchdown in the first quarter off of a 49-yard touchdown pass, and didn’t score again until the third quarter.

Union- 0, Park City-34:
The Cougars were outmatched from the beginning, falling into an early 14-0 hole in the first quarter. That lead doubled before half time, and the final two quarters were a formality for Park City in the lopsided win.

3A South:

Juab- 42, Millard-7:
The favorites in the 3A South sent a message with a dominating victory over Millard in the season opener. Returning quarterback Ryker Osborne threw three touchdowns to three separate receivers. Colton Wright and Max Gurney each added a score on the ground.

Manti- 42, Carbon- 0:
Senior Mac Stevens posted one of the best individual performances of the week, rushing for 139 yards and two scores on the ground, while adding another threw the air. The Manti defense held Carbon to under 100 yards of total offense in the win.

Canyon View-14, Beaver- 41:
The Falcons trailed 21-14 at half time, but could not keep pace with Beaver in the second half. Despite the loss, running back Isaiah Shearer finished with 128 yards and two touchdowns. Canyon View’s secondary allowed three touchdowns and 105 yards.

Delta- 0, Salem Hills- 24:
After playing to a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter, Salem Hills created a two score lead in the second. The Rabbits never managed to put together an efficient offensive drive in the loss.

North Sanpete- 13, Tooele-34:
Tooele romped past North Sanpete, spoiling the debut of 22-year old head coach Rhett Bird. Shawn Taylor delivered the highlight play of the game for the Hawks, scoring on a 50-yard touchdown pass.

Richfield- 17, Ben Lomond- 40:
Richfield quarterback Emmitt Haffen finished an efficient 17-27 for 211 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and 78 yards rushing in the loss. Evan Jerome hauled in four catches for 76 yards and a score.
