Bull elk rifle hunt starts Oct. 8

If you have a permit, you can use a rifle to hunt bull elk in Utah starting Oct. 8. But permits to hunt on any-bull elk units are almost gone. And permits to hunt on spike-only units are going fast. On the morning of Sept. 27, the following bull elk permits were available:

*Unit*                                        *Permits available*

Any bull                                     491

Spike only                                  3,178

If you’d like to participate in the rifle hunt that starts Oct. 8—or the general muzzleloader hunt that starts Nov. 2—you need to get a permit soon.

“There’s a good chance the permits will sell out before the rifle hunt starts,” says Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. “If you want to hunt elk in Utah this fall, I’d encourage you to get a permit now. Utah has lots of bull elk. We don’t want you to miss out on a great experience this fall.”

You can buy a permit at www.wildlife.utah.gov. Permits are also available at DWR offices and from approximately 300 license agents that sell Utah hunting permits.

More information about Utah’s general bull elk hunts is available on pages 20 – 23 of the 2016 Utah Big Game Field Regulations Guidebook. The free guidebook is available at www.wildlife.utah.gov/guidebooks.
