The Carbon Dinos failed to keep pace with the Union Cougars in the 3A North finale, falling 28-0 Friday night in Roosevelt.

Junior Nathan Olsen finished with 82 yards off of 21 carries to lead the Dinos offensively in the loss. Sophomore Collin Lewis ended with 40 yards on the ground and quarterback Triton Abeyta completed two passes for 11 yards.

After playing to scoreless tie in the first quarter, the Dinos gave up the game’s biggest play as Union quarterback Lincoln Labrum connected with Gage Roberts on a 75-yard touchdown pass. The Cougars added one more score on a 12-yard pass from Carson Kelly to Chase Birchell to hold a 14-0 lead at the break.

Two more efficient drives led to short touchdown runs for the Union Cougars in the third and fourth quarters to ice the game. The final league game marked the third time Carbon has been shutout this season.

Union head coach Mat Labrum split time between his senior signal caller Kelly and freshman Labrum. Kelly completed 9-19 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Labrum finished 5-13 for 127 yards and a score. Senior Sean Thompson accumulated 52 yards on the ground.

Friday’s loss extends Carbon’s region losing streak to 54 games spanning over the past 11 years. The last time Carbon won a league contest was Sept. 30, 2005 when they defeated Granite 34-17.

Now 0-9 on the season the Dinos will have one last chance to secure a victory as they travel to Richfield on Wednesday for a non-league tilt. Richfield will also enter the final game of the regular season looking for their first win.
