The Carbon Lady Dinos basketball team delivered a dominating second half performance that led to a comfortable 68-41 victory over the Union Cougars in the season opener Tuesday night in Roosevelt.

Senior guard Lindsey Blanc led an offensive explosion with 19 points in the blow-out victory. Holding a 31-20 at the break the Lady Dinos continued their dominance in the final 16 minutes as they outscored the Cougars 37-21 for the victory.

11 different Carbon players scored at least one point as the team used solid defense to create opportunity on the opposite side of the court. Sophomore Jordan Bianco knocked down one three-point shot on her way to a 10 point performance. Cyene Bigelow finished with eight, and McKenna Sorenson, Paige Haeck and Chandelle Nichols all finished with six.

While Carbon excelled offensively, the defense also managed to keep all but one Union player under 10 points. Tori Ross was the lone Cougar to reach double-figures, scoring 10 points for the contest.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the first of two between the two teams as they will face each other one more time at the Shannon Johnson Classic on Thursday, Dec. 1 at Uintah High School. The pre-season tournament will hold four games in three days for Carbon, including matchups with Uintah, Mountain Crest and Orem.

With the new season off and rolling the Lady Dinos will continue the road portion of their non-region schedule with a trip to Colorado the following week. The first home contest of the season will take place on Dec. 14 when the Lady Dinos welcome in 4A Spanish Fork.
