The Emery Spartans wrapped up the 2016-17 wrestling season at the 2A State Championship Tournament Friday and Saturday at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Senior Ty Mecham and Junior Newt Oveson grabbed the top individual performances for the Spartans, both finishing second in their respective weight class. McKay Meccariello and A.C. Reeve both finished sixth for Emery after winning three matches.
Mecham secured his spot in the 285-pound championship match after defeating Manti’s Sam Tiatia and Delta’s Brett Walker. Despite waltzing past his first two opponents, Mecham fell to Delta’s Bradden Davis by pinfall.
Oveson won his first three matches, defeating Wyatt Morrison of South Sevier, Brady Tullis of Enterprise, and Hunter Anderson of Millard to reach the championship match at 160-pound weight class. Oveson’s championship run came to a close with a 5-2 decision loss to Delta senior Jason Hatch.
Each wrestler punched his ticket to the 2A State Championship tournament with a top-eight finish at the regional tournament on Feb. 3 and 4 in Richfield.
