The Carbon Lady Dinos managed to overcome a slow start to secure a comfortable 53-41 win over Stansbury in the opening round of the 3A State Championship Tournament Saturday night at home.

Trailing 10-8 at the end of the opening quarter, the Lady Dinos took control of the contest by capturing a 31-21 lead at the end of the first half. After a slow paced third quarter, Carbon finished off their first round foe with a 20-16 run to close out the game.

Freshman Jordan Bianco led the way for Carbon with 16 points, nine of which came from beyond the three-point line. Kelsey Sorenson and Lindsey Blanc both contributed eight, and Cyene Bigelow finished with six.

Taylor Hinds was the only Stansbury player to reach double-figures, finishing with a team best 11 points. Mia Thurber helped push the offense with eight points, while both Krystanne Idom and Mackenzie Sargent ended with six.

Saturday’s win moves Carbon to the quarterfinals, which will take place at Utah State University in Logan. With the field cut down to just eight teams, the Lady Dinos will meet the Desert Hills Thunder Thursday at 4:10 p.m..
