Carbon County finally received it’s first bit of snow on Tuesday, although it’s not much, it is a start and many residents are hopeful that more snow will follow. The snow can make it quite difficult to travel through so it’s important that safety precautions are taken during a storm.

“I predict that we are going to get more in the next weeks to come. I just want to remind everybody of a few little tips,” said Sheriff Jeff Wood. “For driving in the snow make sure that you leave early, plenty of time to get where you are going and if you didn’t realize that it snowed at night it’s ok to be a few minutes late with a snow day.”

This allows drivers time to not drive erratically on snow covered roads.

When traveling on the slick roads always leave enough space between your car and the car traveling in front of you. “Make sure you’re slowing down well before you get to intersections so you can be sure to stop at that stop sign, slow down on the corners; just be very cautious this time of year,” stated Wood. Remember that colder winter temperatures can quickly turn wet roads into ice. Residents who must travel up through the canyon as it’s snowing need to follow the snow plows, do not try to pass them because the impact of the slush would cause an accident.

Residents need to remember to keep their sidewalks and walk-ways clear. “I think they are calling for 1 to 3 inches out of this storm this week in our area. So, if we do get that much snow the snow plows will be out as well so make sure you don’t have vehicles out on the street,” said Wood. Leaving vehicles on the street will only hinder the work that the snow plows are trying to accomplish.
