Third quarter struggles doomed the Carbon Dinos in a 68-64 loss to American Leadership Academy in a Region 14 meeting Wednesday night on the road.

Holding a 35-26 lead at the end of the first half, the Dinos were outscored 21-6 in the third stanza. Faced with a seven-point deficit entering the final quarter, Carbon was unable to recover in the eventual loss.

Carbon’s Jordan Vasquez delivered a varsity career-high 28 points on an efficient 9-11 shooting to lead all scorers. Derek Hillam connected on 8-13 shots to finish with 21 points, while Colin Lewis finished with seven.

American Leadership had similar offensive balance as sophomore Hayden Shockley scored 22 points. Senior Brett Staheli chipped in with 17, and senior Jackson Shockley scored eight.

Both teams finished with similar turnover statistics, combining for 29 during the game. The major differential came on ball movement as ALA finished with 18 assists, compared to just seven for Carbon. ALA also had a slight edge in rebounds finishing four better than Carbon.

Now 3-3 in region play, the Dinos are currently fourth in the division, trailing Providence Hall by one game. The win for ALA is the team’s first in division action, which improves their record to 1-5.

Carbon will now look to snap a current two-game skid when they return to the court on Friday against the Delta Rabbits. Friday’s game will be the second and final meeting between the two squads this season. Delta won the first 65-45 back on Dec. 20.
