The Emery County Historical Society would like to invite the public to join them to visit the coal camps of Spring Canyon on Saturday, September 22. Individuals interested in attending the tour are asked to meet at 9:00 am at the Stake Center on Main Street in Huntington or at Swifts Stop and Shop in Helper at 10:00 am.

The Spring Canyon District was called home to over 2,000 miners, businessmen and their families as the mines extracted almost 43 million tons of coal from these rugged hills from the late 19th century through the 1960’s. The first mine district in Spring Canyon was established in 1895 at Storrs. Over the next several decades, numerous mines and small settlements sprouted up in the canyon, including Standardville, Rains, Peerless, Mutual and Latuda.

Join us with our tour guide, Robert Potts as we travel this vintage path to see numerous foundations and mining remains that are still there. The cost for the event is the price of annual dues which is $5.00 per person; the proceeds help to sponsor future events for the society. Guests are urged to bring a lawn chair and sack lunch.

After our tour of Spring Canyon, we will visit Utah State University Eastern’s Art Gallery where we will be privileged to view “LIFE IN A UTAH COAL CAMP” — Dorothea Lange’s photographs of Consumers Mining Camp, 1936.

If you would like to join the society and receive reminders of all their activities/meetings just visit their Facebook page or email emerycountyhistory@gmail.com.
