The second round of the Utah High School Activities Association 3A Basketball State Championship tournament will take place at the B-DAC on the campus of USU Eastern in February of 2020.

In past years the opening round of the tournament has been held a neutral site, most recently Orem High School. The change of venue will not only showcase USU Eastern’s campus and facilities, but also offer a healthy revenue opportunity for Carbon County.

“I cannot say enough about the great work that Greg Dart and Kristian Olsen have done on our campus to solidify this,” said USU Eastern assistant basketball coach Curtis Condie, who also had a hand in the negotiation process. “Carbon High School Principal Bruce Bean also did a tremendous amount of work to help get this done.”

The process to confirm the new sight for the tournament has been a collaborative effort between USU Eastern and the Utah High School Activities Association.

The upcoming season will feature a new playoff system that has every team in the classification qualifying for the opening round, with the higher seeds playing host. The second round will then shift to USU Eastern’s B-DAC, with the winners advancing to the final three-day stage.

The benefits of having the second round of the 3A State Tournament at USU Eastern will go well beyond the basketball court. During the two day event, every high school student interested in attending USU Eastern will have the traditional $50.00 application fee waived.

“It does not matter if you are a basketball player or not,” said Condie. “The application fee will be waived, but also if you bring a sealed copy of your high school transcripts, scholarships may be awarded.”

Extra tours of the USU Eastern campus will also be offered during the two-day event.

The 3A State Tournament will be held over two days on Feb. 14 and 15 for both the boys and girls.
