The Carbon Dinos traveled to Brigham Young University to compete in the 3A State Championship Meet this past Friday and Saturday in Provo.

Competing against 14 other schools in the 3A classification, the Carbon Lady Dinos finished ninth overall with a final score of 34. Delta claimed the state title with a 94 point performance, followed by Juab’s 85 and Grand’s 65. Union and Morgan rounded out the top five placing schools.

“We had weather impacting the meet, a lot of disqualifications and all around just a crazy meet,” said head coach Jimmy Jewkes. “It was up and down all the way around and just a fun meet. But, it was definitely crazy.”

The Carbon boy’s team finished just outside the top 10 as the team accumulated 21 points. Morgan ended as the meet’s top team, followed by Grand and Emery. Delta and Richfield completed the top five.

While the Dinos failed to record a first place finish in any of the meet’s events, the team secured multiple top three finishes.

Sophomore Ryker Childs responded from an earlier DQ to log a third place performance in the 300 meters. Logging a time of 40.49, Childs fell behind South Summit’s Logan Davis and Grand’s Connor Guerrero, just missing out on first place by less than one second.

Carson Frame, Jaylon Dennis, Jacob Jewkes, Jared Spendlove, Ryker Childs and Ammon Wilson all joined forces to help the Dinos earn a second place nod in the sprint medley relay. Ending just behind first place Grantsville, Carbon was nearly the beneficiary of an infraction committed by Grantsville. After reviewing the race, the officials agreed to keep the results in the finial order.

“They disqualified Grantsville for an exchange outside of the zone, so for about 30 minutes we thought we had the state title in that event,” said Jewkes Monday on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “They appealed it and it was upheld. I still never really got a great explanation as to why that is, but we still took second and the kids ran great.”

On the girl’s side of the track Harley Migliori delivered the team’s highest individual finish, ending third in the shot put. The junior’s metric toss of 10.66 placed her only behind Judge Memorial’s Emily Malouf and Grand’s Veda Gritts.

“Harley worked hard all week coming off of a MCL tear and a bone bruise in her leg,” said Jewkes. “she only qualified for state in the shot put, and managed to throw two-feet further than she ever has before.”

Carbon’s track and field season proved to be a successful one as both the boys and girls won meets throughout the regular season. With a large number of underclassmen expected to return next season, the anticipation for 2020 is already beginning to build.
