Both the boys and girls teams from Green River were in action over weekend at the Manila Holiday Classic tournament. Each team played two games in three days. The Lady Pirates would come home with a 1-2 record moving them to 2-4 on the season. The boys would earn a 2-1 record which would move them to 3-1 overall.

Below is a recap of the games:

December 6: Hayden, CO.- 54 Green River Girls- 31

In the first game of the tournament, the Lady Pirates would draw the team from Hayden Colorado. Hayden would jump out to a 23-4 lead in the first quarter, the Pirates would cut the lead to 34-15 at the half and would get it as close as 40-28 after three quarters, but the Hayden team would outscore Green River 14-3 in the fourth to put this one away.

December 6: Rangley, CO.- 44 Green River Girls- 34

Just a few hours after their loss to Hayden the girls were back on the court to face another team from Colorado, Rangley. This time after one quarter the Pirates were still within striking distance at 14-8. By halftime, Rangley had pushed it’s lead to seven. In the second half Green River played Rangely almost even down the stretch, but they would hold on to the lead and take the victory by 10.

December 7: Intermountain Catholic- 11 Green River Girls- 59

What a difference a day makes as Green River would come out firing on cylinders jumping out to a 26-9 first half lead. In the second half it was more of the same as Intermountain Catholic scored just two points and were outscored 33-2, and the Pirates would close out tournament play with a victory.

December 6: Green River Boys- 73 Tintic- 54

The boys team would open play against Tintic. Green River would double them up in the first half 42-21 and would actually get out scored in the second half 33-31 but still held on for the win.

December 7: Green River Boys- 40 Manila- 52

In the second game they would face the host team Manila. Green River would only score four points in the first quarter and that would doom them the rest of the way. Down 26-17 at halftime the Pirates were never able to catch-up in the second half losing by 8.

Leading the way for Green River was Axel Anguiano with 15 points. Virg Mendoza would chip in with 10 and Rad Hughes dropped in 9.

December 7: Dugway- 25 Green River Boys-60

The Pirates came out firing in this one scoring 34 points in the first half while holding Dugway to 17. In the second half Green River would keep it up allowing just eight points from Dugway in the second half to come away with the win.

Up next for the ladies is a trip to Moab to take on the Grand Red Devils. They will be home again on December 19 to play the Grand Red Devil team once more. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7:00.

On the men’s side they will welcome Emery to Green River on Wednesday night at 7:00.
