This week’s Carbon School District weekly updates shine the spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary. Principal Dina Wise stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about what her students, faculty and staff are up to at the school.

The school recently finished up their second quarter and held an assembly to highlight that entire student body. “We did something that we have never done before, we decided that we want to recognize and celebrate all students. So, our students have set out Smart Goals either in the area of academics, behavior or attendance, because those are our school improvement goals and they wrote down what they wanted celebrated. We brought in the entire student body into the gym and every student stood up to the microphone, shared what they were celebrating and we cheered, we hooted and it was just phenomenal,” explained Principal Wise. Even the youngest and shyest students in kindergarten stood up and proudly spoke about their achievements. After the assembly, the students returned to their classrooms to enjoy a small party with their classmates.

Recently the school held their spelling bee competition for the entire school to determine who would move on to the district level. “We sent to fourth graders, John Huff and Bryson Ferguson and one fifth-grader, Juna Valdez to Carbon High for the district spelling bee and unfortunately we didn’t make it to the regionals but they all did a great job,” said Principal Wise. This was a great experience for the three students who did a phenomenal job in representing their school.

The fifth grade recently finished up a huge art project that went international. “We have the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Art Grant and we have Ms. Sara Feik who is our new art teacher for this year and she just finished up the fifth grade International Print Exchange. So every student researched, I believe it was just somewhere in the United States and then they created a print and those will be sent out internationally and we will receive prints internationally that Sara will bring out and share with the fifth-grade students and they had a lot of fun doing that,” stated Principal Wise. The next big art project for the school will involve the first graders who will use geometric shapes in their art project.
