Emery High School sophomore Hayes Dalton stands alone in the 170-pound weight class as a State Champion after finishing a perfect 4-0 at the 3A State Championship Tournament Saturday at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Two weeks after running the table at the Divisional Tournament in Richfield, Dalton returned to the mat this past weekend to close out the wrestling season on a high-note.
“He’s been wrestling really good all year long,” said head coach Kirk Christiansen. “He learns from each loss and he’s put in the time it takes to go be a state champion. We couldn’t be more pleased with his hard work and dedication.”
After winning his first three matches by pinfall, Dalton outlasted Morgan’s Tanner Belinski with a 6-4 decision win to claim the championship.
While Dalton’s finish was the lone State Championship performance, the Spartans delivered a solid team performance as they finished fourth overall.
Standout Bryar Meccariello ended second overall after falling to Juab’s Cade Bowring by decision in the 152-pound championship. Meccariello dominated his first three opponents, winning by pinfall in each match to advance to the finals.
“What a stud he is,” said Christiansen. “State pin record, our season high team points winner and team pin winner. He just racked up a phenomenal season. To lose to that caliber of wrestler for the state title, there is absolutely no shame there.”
Qualifying 20 wrestlers for the season ending tournament, the Spartans ended with 11 top five finishes.
