The Carbon Lady Dinos put together a brilliant 2019 girls soccer season, claiming a Region 12 championship and finishing with a 14-4 overall record.

Led by All-State selection Grace Broadbear, Carbon outscored their opponents 89-22 over the course of the 2019 season. Adding to the impressive offensive numbers the team scored nine goals in four straight outings.

Entering the state tournament as the No. 5 seed in the RPI, the Lady Dinos defeated the San Juan Broncos in their first playoff game. The season came to a close in the quarterfinals with a slim 2-1 loss to the Juab Wasps.

Below is a complete recap of the entire 2019 campaign, including the individual accolades:

August 8- Union- Win 2-1

The Carbon Lady Dinos defeated the Union Cougars 2-1 to earn their first victory of the 2019 soccer season in Roosevelt.

Senior Grace Broadbear found the back of the net twice, once coming off of an assist from Kayla Barney. Entering the midway point up 2-0, Carbon allowed one goal to eventually record the win.

Broadbear’s two goal output comes just one day after she scored once in the first contest of the season. The team suffered a 6-3 loss to Maeser Prep.

Finishing the opening week 1-1 overall Carbon will take the rest of the weekend off before returning to the field at home against American Leadership Academy. The Lady Dinos will head to Gunnison Valley for a meeting with the Bulldogs.

August 13- American Leadership Academy- Win 4-1

Grace Broadbear scored three goals and Thalyn Lyman one in Carbon’s victory over American Leadership Academy in Price.

This victory gets Carbon to a record of 2-1 on a very young season. Next up for the Dinos is a road trip to Gunnison.

August 15- Gunnison Valley- Win 9-1

The Carbon girls soccer team continued their winning ways as they took apart the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs by the score of 9-1.

Carbon started off the season with a 6-3 loss against Maeser Prep on August 7th, but since then haven’t dropped a game in pre-season action.

With the start of the school year just around the corner, the Dinos have a non-conference road match scheduled at South Summit.

Carbon will have it’s first region match and home game of the season on September 3rd vs. South Sevier, game time is set at 4 p.m..

August 20- South Summit- Win 9-2

The Carbon Lady Dinos extended their early season winning streak to four with a dominating 9-2 victory over South Summit in Kamas.

Delivering an offensive explosion from the beginning, Carbon held a secure 5-2 lead at the end of the first half. The offense continued to roll throughout outscoring South Summit 4-0 in the final stanza.

Junior Ryan Brady recorded three goals and one assist to lead the Lady Dinos in the win. Senior Grace Broadbear scored twice, running her season goal total to a team best 10, while also registering three assists.

Freshman Beverly Lancaster helped push the Carbon offense with a personal season high two goals. Sophomore Thalyn Lyman also found the back of the net twice.

The offensive output marks the second consecutive game that the team has scored nine goals. During the four game winning streak the Lady Dinos have combined for 24 goals, while only allowing five.

September 3- South Sevier- Win 9-0

The Carbon Lady Dinos extended their winning streak to five with a dominating 9-0 victory over the South Sevier Rams in the Region 12 opener.

Grace Broadbear scored a game-high four goals, running her season total to 14, as the Lady Dinos improved to 5-1 on the season. The win marks the third straight game that Carbon has scored nine goals.

Holding an 8-0 lead at the end of the first half, the Lady Dinos delivered the finishing touch early in the second half.

Kacie Brady scored three goals in the win, while Ryan Brady added one. As a team Carbon has now scored 36 goals in six games, trailing only Grantsville’s 41. Both teams hold a 5-1 record.

Now 1-0 in Region 12 play, the Lady Dinos will look to continue their early season dominance when they return to the field with a home game against the San Juan Broncos.

September 5- San Juan- Win 9-1

The Carbon Dino Ladies soccer team continued their domination scoring nine goals in their fourth straight game defeating the San Juan Broncos 9-1. They have been defensive minded as well only allowing four goals in their last four games.

Sitting at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Region 12 standings tying them with Emery for first place. The Dinos have been led on the field this season by senior Grace Broadbear with 17 total goals this season. Defensively goalkeepers Emma Flemett, a freshman and senior Katie Marshall have only allowed 12 total goals through seven games.

In the game against the Broncos, Broadbear and freshman Kacie Brady led the way with 3 goals each. Junior Ryan Brady added two goals and senior Kayla Barney would chip in one more.

The Dinos would score three goals in the first half and then exploded for six goals in half number two.

September 10- Richfield- Win 2-1

The Carbon Lady Dinos earned a monumental 2-1 victory over the Richfield Wildcats on the road, running their current winning streak to seven games.

Locked in a 1-1 tie at the end of the first half, Grace Broadbear delivered the go-ahead and eventual game winning goal in the second stanza. The win moves Carbon to 3-0 in region play, while dipping the Wildcats to 2-1.

Broadbear found the back of the net not once, but twice in the win, running her season goal total to 19. She has now scored multiple goals in six of the eight games played and at least one in all eight.

Entering the contest Carbon held the No. 9 ranking in the latest RPI poll, while Richfield held No. 3. The win boosts Carbon two spots to No. 7 with seven region games remaining on the regular season slate.

In three region games this season Carbon has outscored their opponents 20-2. In eight games this season they have scored the opposition 47-13.

September 12- Grand- Win 8-0

The Carbon Lady Dinos soccer team took care of region foe Grand 8-0 for their eighth win in a row. Carbon hasn’t lost a match since August 7.

Freshman Emma Flemett was credited with the shutout, Flemett has three wins on the season and is averaging three saves per contest.

Offensively the Dinos were led by the trio of seniors Kayla Barney and Grace Broadbear as well as freshman Beverly Lancaster who scored two goals each. Junior Ryan Brady and freshman Kacie Brady would also knock in one goal each.

Currently the Dinos are ranked No. 6 in the 3A state RPI mere percentage points behind Richfield the only Region 12 team ahead of them in the statewide standings.

Up next for the Dinos (8-1 overall, 4-0 in region) is a home tilt with the Emery Spartans (5-5, 4-0). The Spartans will enter the match on a streak of their own wining four of their last five.

September 17- Emery- Win 2-1

The Carbon Lady Dinos have taken sole possession of first place in Region 12 with a 2-1 victory over the Emery Lady Spartans at Carbon High School.

Entering the contest as the only two teams left unbeaten in Region 12 play, both teams battled throughout the contest. Carbon entered the break holding a 1-0 lead and managed to play even with the Spartans during the final half.

Jazmin Pettit and Kayla Barney each found the back of the net once to lead the Lady Dinos in victory. The win moves Carbon to 5-0 in region play, while also extending their nine on the season.

The loss for Emery ends a four game winning streak that began at the start of divisional play. With a marquee win over Richfield, the Lady Spartans still remain in the hunt for a region crown.

September 19- South Sevier- Win 8-0

The Lady Dino soccer club hasn’t lost a match since August 7, that’s 44 days. They have also outscored their opponents in that stretch 62-8. So when they headed to Monroe to take on South Sevier to say they were ready would be an understatement. At the end of the match Carbon would have another win 8-0.

This is the second time that these two teams have met up with Carbon winning the first match 9-0 on September 3 in Price.

September 24- San Juan- Win- 8-0

The Carbon Lady Dinos extended their winning streak to 11 games with a dominating 8-0 win over the San Juan Broncos in Blanding.

Jumping out to a monumental lead early, the Lady Dinos scored four goals in each half. The win moves Carbon to 7-0 in Region 12 play and 11-1 overall.

Senior Grace Broadbear scored four goals, running her season total to 25. Tuesday marked the fourth time this season she has scored at least three goals in an outing.

Ryan Brady helped push the Carbon offense with two goals. Shelbee Murdoch and Teah Lowery each scored once.

Goalkeeper Emma Flemett recorded the shutout, the third in four games for the team. In 12 games this season Carbon has allowed a team to score more than one goal only twice.

September 26- Richfield- Win 1-0

The Carbon Lady Dinos are one step closer to clinching at least a share of the Region 12 championship after earning a 1-0 victory over the Richfield Wildcats in Price.

Kinley Cowdell found the back of the net in the first half to give Carbon a 1-0 lead entering the break. The two teams played to scoreless tie in the second half, resulting in a season-series sweep for the Lady Dinos.

Goalkeeper Emma Flemett helped notch another shutout for the Carbon defense. As a team Carbon has allowed just one goal over the last five games, while the last three have ended in shutouts.

Thursday’s win moves the Lady Dinos to 8-0 in Region 12 play and 12-1 overall. Carbon has lost since dropping the season opener to Maeser Prep back on Aug. 7.

Now holding the best record in the 3A classification the Lady Dinos have soared to No. 4 in the latest RPI rankings.

October 1- Grand- Win 8-0

The Carbon Lady Dinos earned their 13th consecutive win and the Region 12 championship with a dominating 8-0 victory over the Grand Red Devils in Price.

Opening a dominate 5-0 lead by the end of the first half, the Lady Dinos easily moved to 9-0 in league play and 13-1 overall on the season. The region championship became official as Emery suffered a loss to Richfield.

Senior Grace Broadbear scored three goals, running her impressive season total to 28. The offense fired on all cylinders as Kayla Barney and Ryan Brady scored two goals each. Kinley Cowdell also found the back of the net to round out the team’s scoring.

Defensively Carbon remained on point as Emma Flemett recorded her sixth shutout of the season at goalkeeper. As a team the Lady Dinos have allowed no more than one goal in division play, while recording five shutouts in the last six games.

The Lady Dinos have thoroughly dominated the competition throughout the region portion of the schedule. In nine games Carbon has scored 55 goals, while only allowing three. The plus-52 margin ranks second to only Manti, who has outscored their region 60-0.

October 3- Emery- Loss 3-2

The Emery Lady Spartans closed out the 2019 regular season with an impressive 3-2 victory over the Carbon Lady Dinos in Castle Dale on Senior Night.

Needing a win over the Region 12 champion Lady Dinos to solidify second place in the division, Emery played a near flawless first half. While Carbon continued to press, the Emery defense did just enough to hold on.

Nya Parkins delivered two goals for the Lady Spartans, while Aspen Hansen found the back of the net once.

Playing from behind throughout the second half, Carbon’s Ryan Brady and Katie Marshall each scored one goal. The loss for Carbon was the team’s first since the season opener back on Aug. 7.

October 10- Manti- Loss 3-0

Carbon was shutout and lost back-to-back games for the first time this season as they fell to the No. 1 ranked Manti Templars in a non-conference match-up on the road.

The Templars defense was too much for the Dinos as they failed to fond the back of the net for the first time all season.

This marks the final game of the regular season as the 3A State Championship playoffs will begin next week.

October 16- San Juan- Win- 4-0

The Carbon Lady Dinos Soccer team began play in the 3A State Championship Tournament. Their first opponent was a familiar one from within their own region, the San Juan Broncos.

In both regular season meetings the Dinos would outscore San Juan by  a combined 17-1. They would be just as dominant in defeating the Broncos 4-0.

Senior Grace Broadbear would score one for her 35th goal on the season, while freshman Kacie Brady would add one also. Junior Ryan Brady continued her great season scoring the other two.

Freshman Emma Flemet would register another shutout between the pipes with five saves.

October 19- Juab- Loss 2-1

The Carbon Ladies Soccer Team’s fantastic season came to an end in Nephi at Juab High School. In a hard fought match that was 0-0 at the half, Juab would score twice to win 2-1.

Sophomore Josephine Kay and junior Shelly Peay would score for the Wasps and for the Dinos freshman Kacie Brady would have the only goal on the day.

All-State Selections:

Grace Broadbear was named a 3A All-State First Team member, leading four Carbon High School all-state selections.

The 2019 First-Team selection comes for Broadbear following an Honorable Mention for her 2018 junior campaign. This past season she scored three goals or more in five games, including three games with four goals.

Junior midfielder Ryan Brady was named to the All-State Second team. Finishing second on the team in goals scored, Brady notched 17 goals in 18 games. Scoring multiple goals in six separate games, Brady logged a hat trick on Aug. 20 in a road contest with South Summit.

Sophomore defender Molly Banks and freshman Beverly Lancaster also earned individual recognition as both were given Honorable Mentions. Both underclassmen played key roles as Carbon finished third in goals allowed throughout region play in the classification.

The 3A All-State teams are voted on by coaches throughout the classification.

Academic All-State:

Grace Broadbear along with Katelynn Vasquez were recognized as Academic All-State selections.
For over 25 years the UHSAA has presented the Academic All-State Award to recognize those students who have excelled in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. Individuals are selected for this award on the basis of their athletic ability and academic proficiency.
