Bernie Torres died on May 27, 2020 at age of 92 at Legacy House in Taylorsville surrounded by the love of her family. The COVID pandemic limited her visitors but couldn’t touch the love that her family near and far had for her. She died peacefully.

She was born in Durango, Colorado in 1927 to Urban Montano and Rebecca Archuleta Montano. She married Ben Torres in 1945 and was a dedicated wife for 68 years; together they raised two children, Patsy and Lennie.

Bernie was a homemaker in the truest sense, her pride and joy was her home. She excelled at cooking, always making the best and favorite meals for her family and anyone who happened to stop by, the saying was, “Grandma can make weeds taste good!” She was a stickler for cleaning and for her routines. Bernie was a loving Grandma to her grandchildren, they were the lights of her life. Her favorite times were when she was cutting up with them or with her sisters; she had a knack for cracking us all up! Bernie’s love for Durango was lifelong. She had vivid memories of her hometown and recounted them throughout her life — loving memories of family, friends, neighbors, classmates and coworkers. These memories sustained and comforted her throughout her life. She dearly loved her family, had great regard and respect for her mama Rebecca, had much love and concern for her father Urban; she was a big fan of her older brother Dan, she was loving and loyal to each of her siblings.

Bernie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ben, her brothers Dan, Max and Robert, her sisters Beatrice and Olympia, her sister-in-law Naomi and brother-in-law Paul.

She is survived by her children Patsy (Anthony) Bueno and Lennie (Dee) Torres, six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, her sister Sarah and her sister-in-law Sara, and many nephews and nieces.

The family extends its appreciation to Legacy House of Taylorsville for their loving and compassionate care.

Due to health concerns, the family has made private funeral arrangements with Mitchell Funeral Home in Price. A graveside ceremony will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in Helper. A celebration of life event will be held at a later date.
