With Halloween right around the bend, Price City Fire Chief Fitzgerald Petersen would like to offer a few helpful safety tips to the community.

“Our big concern this time of year is the children out at times that they’re not used to. There are plenty of things that our foreign to them at that point, it’s a big night, they love it, I loved it. With that though there’s a little bit of excitement and sometimes a lapse in judgment and so I want to talk a little bit about, primarily how they’re visible to cars. Cars are the biggest concern I have during Halloween because cars and children just don’t mix, we know that,” said Chief Petersen. It’s important that costumes and bags have some sort of reflective tape or stickers to help make them more visible to motorists. Parents are strongly encouraged to think about having their children carry a flashlight or glow stick with them during the evening’s festivities.

“After that, it becomes things like the candy that they receive. I would hope that every parent will look carefully at the candy before they have access to it and just look for anything out of the ordinary and just discard it if you don’t know it’s origin and it’s not in a wrapper, throw it away,” stated Chief Petersen. Parents should inspect the candy to look for unusual appearances or discoloration, tiny pinholes or tears in the wrappers, spoiled or unwrapped items and when in doubt, throw it out.

Chief Petersen also had some great pointers for pet owners on this eventful night, “The last thing I wanted to talk to you about just consider your pets. They’re here on earth to guard us and they tend to think of the home as territorial and it’s a very difficult time for them with that many strangers knocking on the door. Know your pet, know their behaviors, maybe keep them in a separate room, maybe put on a television or radio to kind of distract them from the noises, try to keep them away from the children.” Make sure that your pet is properly identified in case they escape from your home or yard during the neighborhood festivities.
