A season filled with adversity came to a close for the USU-Eastern Golden Eagles men's basketball team after suffering a 103-87 loss to the Snow College Badgers in the opening round of the Scenic West Athletic Conference tournament Thursday night in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Needing a win to extend the season USU-Eastern was unable to keep pace with Snow in a back-and-forth contest. Trailing 49-43 at half time, the Golden Eagles were outscored by 10 in the second despite climbing within four.
Sophomore Brandon Sly delivered one of his best performances of his career, finishing with 32 points off of only 18 shots. In his first game since suffering a concussion against Southern Idaho on Feb. 11, Sly also handed out three assists, accumulated two rebounds and two steals.
Fellow sophomore captain Philip Winston ended with 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Tevin Farris scored 15 points in a reserve effort to go along with seven boards and Solomon Rolls-Tyson chipped in with seven points.
Snow center Norbert Janicek paced the Badgers with 28 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Guard Nate Moore was the perfect compliment adding 22 points, six boards and six assists. Braden Koeliker finished with 19 points.
Thursday's loss brings an end to a turmoil filled year that saw suspension of basketball activities and multiple players dismissed for various reasons. Entering the year with a roster filled with talent, USU-Eastern ended the season with just eight players, two of which were added to provide depth.
Even with the mishaps throughout the early part of the season the Golden Eagles managed to finish the season 18-13 overall. Entering the conference tournament the No. 5 seed, USU-Eastern had won four of their previous six games, including victories over Southern Idaho and Snow.
