The USU-Eastern Golden Eagles opened Scenic West Athletic Conference play on the road against the Salt Lake Community College Bruins Thursday and Saturday, finishing 1-3 during the road trip.
After losing the first contest 10-0 Thursday, USU-Eastern suffered a 21-15 setback in the second outing of the day. Falling behind 4-0 early, the Golden Eagles rallied to take a 15-14 lead in the sixth inning. Salt Lake responded by scoring seven unanswered runs in the final two frames to capture the win in the nine inning game.
Using the momentum built in the second contest of the four game set, USU-Eastern never trailed in game three Saturday morning, eventually capturing a 6-4 win. With the game tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, freshman Austin Pitcher knocked a pinch-hit grand slam, scoring Manny Begay, Chase Decosse and Brandon Eyring. Despite two runs from Salt Lake in the final two frames, the four-run shot was enough to give USU-Eastern the victory.
Kaidyn Longman recorded the win on the mound for the Golden Eagles in a complete-game effort. Giving up 10 hits during the seven inning outing, Longman allowed four runs, while striking out two and walking three.
Unable to earn a split in the four game set, the Golden Eagles suffered an 8-0 loss in the fourth and final game Saturday afternoon. USU-Eastern is now 6-14 overall through the first 20 games of the season.
USU-Eastern will now begin a lengthy 12 game home stand beginning on Friday as they play host to Southern Nevada. Sweeping Colorado Northwestern this past weekend, Southern Nevada sits at the top of the conference standings at a perfect 4-0.
The first two games of the four game set will take place Friday beginning at 12:00 pm. The second set of games will get underway Saturday at 11:00 am.
