After being shutout by Manti in the season opener, the Emery Spartans earned their first victory of the season Thursday afternoon as they defeated the Richfield Wildcats 3-1 in Castle Dale.
Tied 1-1 entering the second half, the Spartans managed to keep Richfield off of the scoreboard while finding the back of the net twice. Canyon Allred, Dallan Ward and Ethan Winter all scored one goal a piece as Emery improved to 1-1 on the season.
Starting the season off with a 2A Central region game against Manti on Tuesday, the Spartans were unable to find any rhythm offensively. Falling behind 4-0 by the end of the first half, the second half was a mere formality for the Templars.
Sharing the 2A Central with Gunnison, Grand, Manti, South Sevier, North Sevier and Wasatch Academy, the Spartans will resume league play on Tuesday. Traveling on the road to Moab, Emery will meet Grand, a team that's currently 1-1.
