Spring is in the air for students at Helper Middle School so many activities are going on, both academic and extracurricular. Principal Mika Salas stopped by the KOAL 103.9 FM Newsroom to speak about the various activities her students have been busy with this spring.
“Right now we have a really cool project going on its called a Filmology Project and we actually have two volunteers Jana Metzger and Alex Crumb who have volunteered to run the Filmology program for us,” said Salas. The volunteers meet with the interested students once a month and teach them the concepts of making and editing film.
Violin lessons are being offered through another volunteer, Andrew Lasslo. “He comes in once a week after school to teach violin lessons and does not charge the kids anything for the lessons. He also comes in twice a week during intervention time to give them some extra practice, so it’s been amazing what he has been able to do,” stated Salas.
Art Teacher, Mr. Ovard is doing an after school program called Ramaque for students to enjoy. Salas explained, “The kids are creating ceramic art projects, they are just neat and really cool, it’s just an extracurricular for them to be part of.”
Boys and girls basketball has come to a close for Helper and Salas is very appreciative for all the hard work and the time each of coaches have put in with the players.
A few students were able to compete in an archery competition up north and Helper placed third in the state, with their very own Stevey Oman, sixth grader at Helper named as top shooter in the state. He will be able to have the chance to compete at the national level.
Solo Ensemble for band and choir just wrapped up, while members of the FCCLA will be headed off to state to compete in the next few weeks.
Salas finished by saying, “You know it’s always busy, middle school is always…..we’re not bored ever but you know right now it’s just busy and its fun, it’s a good way to get all the kids involved and just get them as many experiences as we can.”
