Jim Jones has resigned after 28 seasons as head coach of the Emery High School football program, it was announced by Emery High principal Larry Davis Tuesday afternoon.

Appearing on KOAL 103.9 FM and 750 AM's Drive Time Sports, Davis confirmed that Jones will retire from the Utah school system and relocate to accept a principal assignment in Arizona.

“It really is sad to see him go as a school administrator, as a coach, a teacher and as a personal friend,” said Davis. “I certainly understand his reasons for leaving and I fully support that.”

Jones, the only coach in the program's history to win a state championship, had two separate stints as head coach with the school. Accepting the job in 1987, Jones stepped away from the program in 2003. Following the 2005 season, Jones filled the head coach vacancy left by Kevin Reynolds.

During his time at the helm, Jones led the school to it's only state championship victory and seven region championships. Accumulating a record of 164-116, Jones is tied for 12th all-time in the state of Utah for wins, and 9th amongst wins for coaches at one school.

According to Davis, Jones notified the expected returning players from the team of the news last week.

“He made it very clear to them what he was doing and why he was doing it,” said Davis. “It was an emotional meeting between coach Jones and his players. I think the main question on their mind right now is who the next coach will be.”

After consulting with Emery County school district superintendent Kirk Sitterud, Davis says they have come to a decision to open the job up to those on Jones' current coaching staff. The coaching job will not including a teaching position.

“We've agreed we want to open the job up to the staff to begin with,” said Davis. “We believe there are some good candidates there and I have given them until April 1 to let me know if they are interested. It would be for a full time head football coach.”

While the schedule for the upcoming 2016 season is basically completed, several other duties need to be filled such as ordering equipment and making arrangements for summer weight programs and camps. With a long list of work to be done, Davis said they are moving on finding a replacement quickly.
