Posting a season high in runs and hits the Emery Spartans easily defeated the Union Cougars 15-4 Wednesday afternoon at home in a non-region contest.
As a team the Spartans posted 15 hits compared to just five for the Cougars in the blowout victory. Out of the 15 hits seven resulted in extra bases, including a triple from Bryce Dugmore.
Kyler Stilson earned the win on the hill for Emery keeping Union off balance throughout the contest. Emery trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the first frame before scoring four runs. The offense kept the pressure on by adding four more runs in the second inning.
Jordan Baletka registered two doubles, while Stillson, Koda Alton, Race Nielson and Tel Gardner all finished with one. Before the offensive jolt on Wednesday the Spartans had been held to just two runs and five hits combined in the previous two league games.
While Wednesday’s win didn’t affect the current 2A East standings, the Spartans will hope the momentum carries over when they return to the field Friday against North Sevier. As it stands right now Emery is two games back of San Juan for the final playoff spot. North Sevier is at the top of the standings at 6-1.
Friday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm and will set the stage for the final week of region play. Wrapping up the regular season next week, Emery will meet Monticello twice and Grand once.
