The Rule the Rocks Skateboard and BMX Competition will be held at the Terrace Hills Skate Park in Price on Thursday, May 19 with registration to begin at 4:00 pm till 5:00 pm, and competition will start at 5:00pm.

Brittany Carzin with the Department of Health spoke about the event, “This is our ninth year and we are so excited to come back again and we would like to provide a great opportunity for our young people in the area to come out to showcase their skateboarding and BMX skills. All while sharing with them an important message about tobacco prevention, saying no to tobacco and not using. Whether it be cigarettes or chewing tobacco or e-cigarettes, saying no to that upfront since the nicotine affects your ability to have those healthy lifestyles.”

Rule the Rocks is part of the non-profit organization The Truth, Utah’s Anti-tobacco Movement to help spread the truth about tobacco across the state of Utah.

“We have three different categories, beginner, intermediate and advanced, then we break it up by age group, so everybody is welcomed to come out and participate where ever they fell they fit. With that there is cash prizes and other prizes for the winners of all those categories, everyone gets a t-shirt for participating. We require everyone to wear a helmet, we want safety first here, as well as, if you are under eighteen a parent does need to come so they can sign a waiver,” said Carzin.

The event is not only for skateboarders and BMX riders but for the entire community to come and enjoy. “We like to have a lot of information available, there’s some other games going on the sides in terms of testing your knowledge. This year we’re adding a few little pieces in terms of social media. So we’re really hoping people will come out so they can engage with us there and have a continually engagement with us throughout the year. There will be some additional social media competitions this year for using certain hash tags. We really do encourage everybody to come out and have some fun with us,” said Carzin. Hashtags that are being used to mark the ninth year of the event are #RTR9 #NotTobaccosGuineaPic and #UtahSkate

The event makes four stops in the state as Carzin explained, “We start out in Vernal, we go to Price on our second day, than Moab and Cedar City. You can visit http://waytoquit.org/ and specifically information on Rule the Rocks visit our Facebook page which is Way to Quit and there’s a lot of information, some great videos and it will tell you everything you need to know.”
