Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood and his department were busy over Memorial weekend by beefing up patrol allowing them to be present out in the community. This was to assure that everyone was celebrating safely throughout the holiday weekend. Overall, it was a pretty uneventful weekend as far as emergencies and/or fatalities in the county.

“We had four over-time shifts, extra patrols out for graduation night, just to be out to make sure that everything went well. We didn’t want to cause any waves but we wanted people to know we were out there and to be responsible,” said Wood. The Sheriff was given the opportunity to be a part of the Lighthouse Graduation ceremony. His speech to the graduates were about how they are starting a new chapter in their lives, he reminded each graduate that they hold the future of America in their hands. His entire speech was posted to the department’s Facebook page and was to all high graduates in the county.

The weather this week will be perfect for deputies to get their gun training completed. Wood explained further, “This week we are doing qualifications for our firearms. So annually, once a year we have to qualify with all the firearms we carry. The Sheriff’s office carries hand guns, shot guns and rifles, and we qualify on the day course and a night course for our pistols, so just to have confidence that your law enforcement is highly trained, proficient with their weapons.” The qualifications are very challenging for deputies and some may not pass the first time, but they will eventually qualify.

Community members need to be aware of the importance of having an address number on their home. Wood stressed the significance, “House numbers are important and some way to light them at night. If you have a house numbers on turn your porch light on so it can be seen at night. If you call 911 the first responders have to be able to find your address and we’ve found that there are a lot of addresses in Carbon County that don’t even have house numbers on them.” In an effort to serve Carbon County better, the Sheriff is requesting that residents cooperate in posting their street numbers on their homes.

Wood will be at Smith’s Food and Drug for a fundraiser for Primary Children’s Hospital, he will be “jailed” and will have to post bail by calling individuals to help him. So if community members receive a call from the sheriff on Saturday, June 4 it’s a good call.
