Using two offensive gems Helper posted a midweek sweep over Roosevelt to open up the American Legion season on the road Wednesday, winning the two games by a combined score of 30-4.

Anthony Maclean earned the win on the hill in game one of the double-header, pitching three scoreless innings as Helper blasted Roosevelt 18-1. Zac Bradley and Taylon Abeyta pitched the remainder of the game in a relief effort in the blowout win.

“It was good to get the legion team back on the field,” said manager Jeff Cisneros. “We got everyone on the squad a lot of time on the field and did a very good job of pitching and hitting the ball.”

Maclean rounded out his performance by finishing with two doubles at the plate. Cody Lowe and Mitch Olson both recorded two doubles and Tel Gardner finished with a double and a single. Cole Fossat added to the offensive explosions by blasting a two-run home run.

Game two of the double-header was a similar story as Helper once again stormed past Roosevelt, this time 12-3. After scoring four runs in the opening inning, the remainder of the game was a mere formality.

“We have a lot of talent and experience on this team with some older kids,” Cisneros said. “We are going to take advantage of the American Legion rules and let some of the older guys play. I’m comfortable with our team and I’m excited to see how the summer plays out.”

Jayden Flemmet was awarded the win on the mound despite pitching just one inning. Once again the Helper pitching staff received a huge amount of run support as the offensive continued to fire on all cylinders.

Cameron Gunter finished with two doubles and Wyatt Wilson recorded one in the blowout win. Maclean stayed hot in the box, finishing with one triple to round out the extra base hits for Helper in the second win of the season.

Now 2-0 in Southern Division play, Helper will look for the season sweep of Roosevelt when the two teams meet for the final time Friday in Helper. Once again hosting a double-header, only the first game will count towards league records.

Start time for Friday’s action is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm and the second game will follow immediately after. Friday will be the first of a four game home stand for Helper, which will continue on Wednesday against Price.
