It seems as though Sheriff Jeff Wood was just announcing that the Search and Rescue Team would be hosting a Demolition Derby in conjunction with the Carbon County Fair. Now after months and months of advertising, personally inviting individuals to come participate has finally paid off.

“I was there at Tire King yesterday and they had 43 on their board, $15,000 in payouts for the drivers of the cars. The 80s and newer chain and bang is the biggest class, it will have the best payout,” stated Wood. When the event was first announced, the registration fee was free for individuals who signed up by the end of June and the majority of drivers took full advantage of deal. The registration fee is now $25.00 which is still affordable for drivers who wish to participate. Registration will be taken till 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 12 at the event.

Search and Rescue has also put together a fun activity for the kids in the area to participate in their own version of the derby, as Wood explains further, “At the fair on Friday we are having the Power Wheels Derby for the kids, so five to nine years old can get their little power wheels involved in a derby there, that will be fun too.” This is a free event starts at 5:00 pm for both “up and coming” derby drivers and spectators.

There is always one thing you can count on from the Sheriff and that is his willingness to participate in community events. “My derby car if anyone wants to see it, is parked in front of Tire King right now. Mine has my number 1R1 on the side, its black and white, you just can’t miss it,” said Wood. The meaning of his number, 1R1 is his call number with dispatch services.

The Search and Rescue is a volunteer entity so proceeds from ticket sales helps generate the funds needed to help their team through the year. “Demolition Derby you know we only have one in this county a year, it’s a big event, should be a lot of fun. It’s a way for Search and Rescue to make money but it’s also a way for us to say, thank you to our community,” stated Wood.

Tickets for adults are $8.00, children 6 to 12 years of age $6.00 and may be purchased at Tire King, Castle Country Radio Stations, Sutherlands, Grakos Tires, Carbon Recreation and the Sheriff’s office. Tickets will be slightly higher at the gates, Adults $10.00 and children $8.00. Gates will open at 4:00 pm, with engines reeving up and ready to roll at 6:00 pm.
