The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church has invited the community to their Centennial Celebration on Friday, August 19, Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21. There are many activities scheduled for the celebration such as a golf tournament, a special banquet with dancing and a historical bus tour. Special guests will be in attendance, his Eminence, Metropolitan Isaiah of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver and other priests who have served the Price community
Connie Hamilton, an Event Organizer talked about the event, “This is a fantastic deal, we are so honored to honestly be alive to celebrate a centennial anniversary, The Assumption Church was built in 1916, so this year being 2016 is our centennial and we have been planning this for over a year. We have quite the schedule of events and it’s going to be a three-day event, August 19, 20 and 21.” The Assumption Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and is believed to be one of the oldest Greek Orthodox Church in continuous use with services and festivals.
Friday will kick off with a golf tournament to be held at the Carbon Country Club at 8:00 am, cost is $140.00 for a team of 4 or $40 for individual who will be assigned to a team. For more information, golfers can contact the Carbon Country Club at 637-2388.
One hundred years have passed since the Assumption Church was built so Carbon County Greeks have seen dramatic changes to the church, Hamilton added, “During this entire three-day event there will be an historical display in the basement of the church. This consists of artifacts, pictures and displays of all the families from 1900s, who knows how early, I’m hoping we have some from 1916 on.” A Philoptochos Dinner will close out the day at 7:00 pm, the cost to attend will be $10.00 per person and will be held at the church pavilion.
“Then Saturday we have a bus tour that starts at 9:00 am and it’s a guided tour bus that’s going to visit the mining towns of Kenilworth, Castle Gate and go to the Helper Mining Museum. Anyone interested in that will meet at the church 8:45 am for the tour, it will go till about 12:00 pm,” said Hamilton. The cost for the tour is $10.00 per person followed by a coffee social from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Guests will have the opportunity to visit the Historical Display which will be open from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A painting by David Richey Johnson who is the curator of the Boxcar Galley will have a painting of the church on display for guests to enjoy.
Saturday evening there will be a huge gala banquet and dance from 6:00 pm to 11:30 pm at the Carbon County Event Center located at 450 South Fairgrounds Way. The cost is $75.00 per adult, $25.00 per child 12 years and under. Live entertainment and guest speakers are scheduled to attend.
“One thing that is very, very important during this whole thing is we are having a Centennial Anniversary Memory Book. This commemorative keepsake will include a history of the church from 1916 to 2016, along with a lot of historical photos and events. We are also taking memory advertisement, a section remembering our loved ones and business friends. So this is open to businesses and people that would like to contribute to the memory book,” stated Hamilton.
