The Carbon School District weekly update features Bruin Point Elementary located in East Carbon. Although most of the schools in Carbon County have just finished up their third week of school most of students at Bruin Point have been busy with educational activities provided to them during summer months.
“At the beginning of our summer we had an extended reading program for some of our students who opted to participate with us, to avoid the summer slide from the reading. We had great success, great turnout and the kids did wonderful and we had a three week jump start program at just the first of August that the kids were able to come participate; we talk about dinosaurs and did some fun things there,” said Psych Coordinator, Mrs K’Lyn Hepworth. “We’re starting our afterschool hours, we’ll be having a pottery club brought to our school, we have a lady coming in to do music, and we’re going to start a lego robotics club out there.” All of these activities will go along the lines for math and science learning for the students.
Principal Dina Wise is returning for her second year at the helm and is very excited for a new school year, “Bruin Point is a buzz with activity, we have several new faculty members. We have a new preschool teacher, a new third grade teacher and a returning fifth grade teacher. We also have the after school program, which has brought on three new members on our staff.” The new addition of faculty/staff will make the vision and goals that Wise has set for the school year achievable.
One of the goals is a 10 percent improvement to the school’s math proficiency rate. “What we have done is contracted. We are going to do some professional development for our teachers outside of the regular school day. Our Community Council has been generous and has provided a stipend for that, so that my already underpaid, overworked teachers are going to get reimbursed for that, their time and energy. We are all very thankful for our Community Council and what it does to support our school,” stated Wise. There will be quarterly math nights for parents to come to the school to learn the math concepts that will be taught for the quarter so that they may help their students at home.
