The volleyball season came to a close for the Emery Lady Spartans after two consecutive losses Saturday at the 2A State Championship tournament at the UCCU Center in Orem.
Entering the tournament the No. 3 seed from Region 15, the Lady Spartans earned a victory in the opening round over Layton Christian, the No. 2 seed from Region 14 Friday night. Dropping the first game 25-22, Emery rallied to win the next three 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18.
The victory over Layton Christian set Emery up against Enterprise in the quarterfinals, again Friday night. Despite the momentum built in the opening round win the Lady Spartans had no answer for Enterprise, falling in straight sets 25-11, 25-13 and 25-18.
After falling to Layton Christian Emery’s championship hopes evaporated but the team still had a chance to extend their season through the consolation bracket. The season came to a close in the first consolation game as the girls suffered a loss to North Sevier.
While the Lady Spartans failed to place in the state tournament the team enjoyed success throughout the season. Finishing behind only San Juan and North Sevier, Emery logged victories over Grand, Manti and Gunnison throughout the Region 15 season.
North Summit claimed the 2A State Championship, defeating South Summit in the title game. Delta, Enterprise, San Juan, North Sevier, Kanab and Millard completed the top eight of the 16 teams competing at the season ending event.
