Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood held a press conference Thursday, Nov. 3 at 11:00 am to release the identity of the victims in the double homicide near the Hiawatha Ranch on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
The victims have been identified as Susan Peterson, 45, and James Peterson, 23. Both are from Ferron, Utah and have been identified as the mother and the younger brother of incarcerated suspect, Seth Gordon Peterson also of Ferron.
“There had been a prior police call out there that we had investigated approximately three hours prior to the incident,” said Wood. “It was a non-violent call and was determined that there was no threat at that time.”
Dispatch received a second call around 5:53 pm and law enforcement from Price City Police and Highway Patrol responded to the incident at a farm off of State Road 122. Per Wood when the officers arrived on the scene they were given a suspect vehicle description. Officers observed that vehicle exit a dirt road to head westbound on Hiawatha Road, where the chase began. The chase lasted approximately four miles before the suspect left the vehicle and fled on foot. After a short foot chase the suspect was peacefully captured with reportedly no weapons in his possession.
Very little details were given at the press conference as far as a motive. “We are still gathering information as to the exact events that led up to this,” said Wood. Investigators are still gathering evidence at the scene which currently is in three separate locations; the farm house, the field near the house, a ditch and a hill near the farm. The Peterson family is not listed as owners of the ranch and why both young men were on the property is unknown. According to Wood the mother was there to pick up the 23-year-old son.
Officials currently have two witnesses and are looking for a third individual who may have been on the scene as well. Wood added, “The team of detectives have been out all night with these folks and they are now going through a walk-through of the scene with eyewitnesses.”
Suspect was booked into the Carbon County Jail on two counts of aggravated murder – 1st degree felony, one count of attempted murder -1st degree felony, theft of a motor vehicle a 2nd degree felony and failure to stop at the command of an officer. All charges are being screened through the Carbon County Attorney’s office. Bail will be set by the Seventh District Court of Utah.
