The Helper Middle School is getting close to their Christmas break which will begin on the 21st of December for the entire Carbon School District. Principal Mika Salas stopped in to the Castle Country Radio Station to reflect on the year and express her appreciation to local agencies and businesses that have been proud sponsors for the school thus far.

“United Way, those of you who give to the United Way it does go directly back to our community and United Way has been fantastic with providing us shoes for students who need shoes and Carole Wright is just fantastic,” stated Salas. United Way of Eastern Utah is the agency that conducts the Angel Tree for community members that need the service for their children in both Carbon and Emery counties.

Another agency that has proved time and time again to be a positive force with the school is the local Youth Detention Center. “Angie McCourt, Kevin Anderson and Tessa Bridge have been wonderful, they’ve worked with us for years. They support our students with mentoring, with emotional support. They come in and meet with our kids on a regular basis and we just want to say thank you,” said Salas.

The school has a program that they have incorporated for students to strive and do their very best academically and behaviorally. “We have an incentive program that we do to reward students for getting caught being good, for getting caught for following our expectations and doing what they are suppose to do. We have drawings everyday to say thank you to the kids who do everything the right way,” said Salas. For several years the big sponsor for the school’s incentive program has been Manager Chris Grey at Swifts Stop and Shop.

Salas finished by inviting the entire community to come out for the annual winter band and choir concert scheduled for Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm in the auditorium.
