A huge first quarter propelled the Emery Spartans as they kept their unbeaten record intact with an 83-40 win over the Millard Eagles Friday evening at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Junior Easton Gordon connected on all five of his three-point tries to finish with 15 points. Senior Bowdie Jacobson also finished with 15, while two others reached double-figures as the Spartans improved to 5-0 on the young season.
“I like how we are working together really well right now as a team,” said Gordon during the post-game show on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM. “We all like each other a lot and I think that’s a big part of why we can do that.”
The Spartans opened the game with a huge run, holding a 27-6 advantage at the end of the opening quarter. Despite a slower tempo in the second quarter the Spartans held Millard to just five points in the eight minute span to create a 42-11 lead at half time.
With the game nearly decided at the break head coach Todd Jeffs was able to experiment with his bench in the final two quarters. Cade Brazier made the most of his time in the varsity contest, scoring 12 points off of the bench. Kyson Stilson scored five and Kyler Wilstead contributed four.
Jaxon Wardle pushed the Millard offense with a team-best 14 points from a starting role. Kaleb Rowell chipped with 13 and senior Wyatt Fullmer contributed 11. Friday’s loss dips the young Millard team that has only one senior to 0-3 on the year.
With only four games remaining before Christmas break, the Spartans will play three games in four days beginning on Wednesday. Two of the three games will take place at home, beginning with Wednesday’s contest against Delta.
The Spartans will travel Friday for a meeting with 3A North Sanpete, before returning home Saturday for a match-up with the Carbon Dinos.
