The holiday season should be a time of celebration but it’s also a time for scammers to come out of the wood work to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood has a few warnings and tips for the public during the holiday season so that they don’t fall victim to such scams.

“If you’re going to have packages delivered to your home and you know that you are not going to be home, try an alternative location maybe your office or a family members house,” said Wood. “Scammers will follow the delivery trucks and wait for a vacant house and soon as the truck delivers it, it drives up and they come in and steal the package.” Another idea is to ask trusty neighbors to keep look out for your deliveries and if they notice anything out of the ordinary to contact law enforcement immediately.

Scammers know that shopping for the holidays is on everyone’s mind so they send out emails with bogus deals. “If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not true and it could be a phishing scheme. They may be wanting you to sign up for this so they can get your information,” stated Wood. Do not click on links in emails and make sure your anti-malware software is fully updated and licensed. If you feel as though you may have fallen victim to a scam contact the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.

The holidays are a time to celebrate whether it’s attending a company or family party. Every responsible host needs to make sure that their guests get home safely at the end of the night. “Designated driver always and you know it seems like that smart people make bad decisions at times – just have a plan before you go,” stated Wood. Never let your guests drive home impaired.
