The Emery Spartans swim team joined 13 other schools in one last competition before the Christmas moratorium this past Friday and Saturday at the Tooele Invitational.

Competing against teams from the 2A and 3A classifications, the Emery boys finished fifth overall as they accumulated 183 total points. Tooele won the event with 332 points, followed by Uintah, Bear River and Cedar.

The Lady Spartans finished with 158 points to end in seventh place. Tooele cruised to a first place finish on the girl’s side of the pool with 302 points. The Carbon Lady Dinos notched a second place performance with 230 points. Grand, Stansbury and Uintah completed the top five.

Daryl Guymon logged the lone first place finish in an individual event for Emery, topping the field in the 100 yard fly. Finishing the event with a time of 57.21, Guymon defeated Uintah’s Jason Zapata who ended in 57.43 seconds.

Guymon nearly brought the Spartans another individual first place performance, but fell just short in the 100 yard free. Finishing just .8 seconds behind Uintah’s Carson Talbot, Guymon claimed second place with a time of 51.30.

Guymon did help anchor a victory in the 200 yard free relay as Emery defeated second place North Sanpete by nearly three seconds. Garret Stilson, Nate Gilbert and Keldon Guymon all pushed the team to a top time of 1:34.52.

The weekend invitational leads Emery into a lengthy pause as the team heads into the Christmas break. The Spartans will return to the pool on Jan. 4 as they travel to Richfield for a region competition hosted by the Wildcats.
