Six first place event finishes was enough to propel the Carbon Lady Dinos to a Region 12 championship during the division finale Saturday in Richfield.

Competing against three other schools the Lady Dinos accumulated 388 points to easily swim past second place Canyon View’s 273 point performance. The Richfield Wildcats finished in third with 242 points, followed by North Sanpete in last.

Canyon View easily claimed the region championship on the boy’s side of the pool with a dominating 425 point performance. Richfield Wildcats second with 282 points, followed by Carbon with 220. North Sanpete rounded out the field of four with 88.

The Lady Dinos provided fireworks in the opening event of the afternoon by breaking the school record in the 200 yard medley relay by 1.30 seconds. Megan Swasey, Sadie Crompton, Veronica Ibanez and Amanda Lui topped Richfield for first place in the event, finishing with a time of 2:04.36.

Swasey provided the next top finish for the Dinos by setting a personal best in the 200 yard IM. Finishing in 2:34.61, Swasey shaved 5.53 seconds off her time to set a personal best in the first place performance. Teammate Kacee Barrett finished in third, also setting a personal best time.

Adding to a brilliant day in the pool, Swasey won another individual event in the 100 yard backstroke, and again set her personal best with a final time of 1:09.87. Once again the Lady Dinos added a third place finish as Shannon Baker finished behind Richfield’s Sophie Murdock.

Ibanez added two first place finishes for the Lady Dinos, adding to the team’s point total. Setting a personal best by 3.49 seconds, Ibanez easily won the girl’s 500 yard freestyle. Ibanez also defeated teammates Crompton and Barret in the 100 yard butterfly, giving Carbon a first through third sweep of the event at the podium.

The final win for the girl’s team came in the final event of the day as Lui, Swasey, Baker and Ibanez won the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:15.35. The girls managed to shave 2.81 seconds off of their best time, defeating Canyon View by 15.28 seconds.

Rylan Chamberlain gave the Carbon boy’s their first victory of the day in the second session as he won the 100 yard butterfly by less than a second. Finishing in 1:01.65, Chamberlain managed to top Richfield’s Jaden Kitchen, who ended with a time of 1:02.17.

Tyson Swasey also delivered a first place performance in the 100 yard freestyle, scoring a time of 54.89. Canyon View’s Johnathan Edwards finished behind in second with a time of 56.47.

With the region and regular season now complete, the Dinos will turn their focus to the state championship meet on Feb. 10 and 11 at Brigham Young University in Provo. The championship meet will complete the 2016-2017 season.
