The Emery Spartans closed out the home portion of the regular season schedule in style as they defeated the North Sevier Wolves 63-46 Friday night in Castle Dale.

Koby Butler recorded another double-double, this time finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Spartans pulled away late from the Wolves. Bowdie Jacobson poured in 18 points, and Zac Jorgensen ended with 10.

“Tonight was a little rough, but I feel like we will get the kinks worked out over the next few games,” said Butler following the win. “I think we need to stay calm in close games, and so far this year we’ve been pretty good at that.”

Holding just a 29-25 lead at the end of the first half, the Spartans outscored North Sevier by three in the third quarter. Picking up the pace in the fourth, Emery pulled away with a 23-13 run to close out the game.

Brooks Mickelsen posted a team-high 17 points for North Sevier, as they slipped to 0-8 in Region 15 play. Marcus Fielding continued his consistent play out of the backcourt by scoring 13 points, nine of which came from deep.

As a team the Spartans finished the game 23-56 from the field, compared to North Sevier’s 16-49 performance. Emery also easily won the turnover battle as they forced 17, and committed just eight for the game.

Each of the four Emery seniors started the contest with sequential baskets, bringing the crowd to their feet immediately. The win runs Emery’s home winning streak to 27, meaning that each of the seniors never suffered a home lone loss in a varsity game they participate in.

Friday’s win, coupled with a San Juan loss to Grand, gives the Spartans a two game advantage at the top of the Region 15 standings with just two games remaining. Emery will have an opportunity to clinch their third consecutive league crown on Wednesday, when they travel to Blanding to meet San Juan.
