Jamin Jensen converted a game-winning layup as time expired to lift the Carbon Dinos into the state championship tournament with a 53-51 win over the Juab Wasps Friday night in the regular season finale at home.

Needing a win to avoid a play-in game to get to the state tournament, the Dinos outscored the Wasps by 11 points in the fourth and final quarter to secure the two-point win. The victory forced a three-way tie for second, leading to a coin flip tie-breaker which ended with Carbon finishing the No. 3 seed in the region.

Jensen finished with 19 points, including three makes from beyond the perimeter to help pace the Carbon offense in the final home game of the season. Kyle Quinton continued his consistent play by also adding 19 points. Both Gage Daugherty and Chase Morgan finished with five.

The must win situation ended in heartbreak for the Wasps, who defeated Carbon earlier in the season. Despite the setback Aaron Clark scored a game-high 26 points, while also hitting three-shots from deep. Jakota Snow contributed 13, and four others scored at least three.

Friday’s win falls in line with the recent surge of the Dinos after suffering a three game losing streak. Needing two wins in the final three games of the season, Carbon scored victories over Richfield and Juab to qualify for the postseason.

The Dinos will now turn their attention to their first round playoff game, which will take place Friday on the road against Tooele, the No. 2 seed from Region 10. Also ending the regular season in a tie, Tooele also finished 4-4 in league play.

Tip-off for Friday’s win-or-go-home contest is scheduled for 7:00 PM. A win for either team means a trip to Logan for the quarterfinals on Feb. 23 at Utah State University. The winner of Friday’s matchup will go toe-to-toe with the winner of Ridgeline.
