The Emery County Historical Society presents tours of the historical coke ovens in Dragerton on Saturday, April 29. Guests will meet at the Stake Center located at 215 North Main Street in Huntington at 10:00 am. Guest will than travel to the city park in Sunnyside to meet the tour guide at 11:00 am to take the trek to see some of the original ovens that remain intact.

The history of the coke ovens took began in the early part of 1902 when miners commenced building the ovens. During the summer and fall, the first 200 ovens were completed. This was the starting point of the coke industry Dragerton. At different times during up to 1918, 819 ovens were in operation. By the 1930’s, the coke ovens sat idle, until Henry J. Kaiser opened 297 of them in the early 1940s to operate his steel mill. Finally, in 1958 the coke ovens were permanently closed.

The cost to attend this event is annual dues of $5.00 per person. Guests will need to bring a sack lunch with them.
