Carbon County School District weekly update features Bruin Point Elementary which is located in Sunnyside about 30 minutes from Price. They do some pretty great things at the school due to the wonderful leadership of fifth grade students who form the student council.
“It’s their job to set an example for the rest of the students in school. They’re all very much leaders and so they have done some awesome things. They get to do skits to portray these character traits when we have our spirit rallies they make a skit up so all the other kids can see the good and the bad ways to do things and they love doing that,” said Ms. Lela VanDuren, Student Council Manager. The students enjoy leading the students and performing their morning duties which include morning announcements, raising and lowering the flag each day
“Each month we feature a character trait that we are trying to get students to buy into and patent their lives after and each month we do a service project to help some community organization to try and help other people’s lives,” said Ms. Lela. At the beginning of each month student council performs their skit and introduces what their service project will be for the month.
“One service project is the Carbon County Animal Shelter. What that’s about is a local shelter that rescues lost and abandoned pets. So we donate pet toys, blankets and money for the animal shelter to buy food and cat food,” explained Jersey Wayman, Student Council President. “The Pet Fair is a Pet Day and we each get to bring a pet to school and parents must be there and the pet must be animal friendly no aggressive pets.” Students paid a fee to be allowed to bring their pets to school for the day.
Other service projects the school participated in was the Pennies by the Inch which benefits the Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and a mitten pillar that was held during the Winter. Students also focused on self-management and how they could talk themselves down from confrontation with students and teachers.
The remainder of the year will focus on all the Character Traits learned throughout the entire school year. Students will be encouraged at the end of the school year to continue what they have learned and practice the Character Traits during the summer.
The remainder of the year will involve School Clean-up and No Grave Unadorned as their service projects.
